Painting spectacles in oils
Sequence in oils for painting spectacles.
Palette: Burnt Umber, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White.
Rough pencil drawing on the canvas. Boxes drawn around the extremities to refine the drawing. An acrylic wash of yellow, white, and brown was painted over the canvas to ghost and seal the pencil.
Frame painted in oils with Ivory Black and Burnt Umber with a touch of medium for flow.
Areas of Burnt Sienna and yellow were added to vary the frame. White and yellow blended for the highlights, and a white dot placed in the centre.
Shadows painted with brown and black. Applied thinly with a medium, then softened with a cotton bud.
Shadows on the lenses were painted thinly with black and brown.
Subtle white highlights were added to the lenses for reflections.
Medium: 3 parts turpentine, 2 parts linseed oil and 1 part damar varnish.
