OIL PAINTINGS ON RECYCLED WOOD

I had a few sections of pallets left over after making a raised bed for plants. Rather than burn them, I decided to try painting directly on the wood. It wasn’t as easy as anticipated. The main problem was finding areas free of knots and dents to paint on. The actual painting process evolved after repeated attempts. I trace the image's outline onto the wood, then paint a white silhouette inside with acrylic paint. Effectively creating a canvas to work on. After this, the shapes and forms are painted in flat oil colours, without detail, to ensure the image is opaque. Once dry, details are added in layers to get the three-dimensional image I aim for.

Nuthatch bird oil painting on recycled wood by Mike Skidmore

Nuthatch. Oil painting on recycled wood

A nuthatch is my favourite bird for a painting. Placing it on a piece of real wood brought it to life in the nesting hole.

Blue tit. Oil painting on recycled wood

This painting of a blue tit on a real piece of wood looks so real as it perches next to a nesting box entrance.
