OIL PAINTINGS ON RECYCLED WOOD

A few sections of old pallets, sanded smooth, make a perfect surface for painting with oils. Still life objects and birds come to life, looking so realistic they could be lifted off the bare wood beneath them. The painting process involves painting a white silhouette of the image, effectively creating a canvas to work on. After this, the shapes and forms are rendered in oil colours to ensure the image is opaque. Once dry, details are added in layers to create a three-dimensional image. A coat of clear varnish applied to the surface protects the painting and accentuates the colours.

Nuthatch. Oil painting on recycled wood

A nuthatch is my favourite bird for a painting. Placing it on a piece of real wood brought it to life in the nesting hole.

This painting of a blue tit on a real piece of wood looks so real as it perches next to a nesting box entrance.
