personal and commissioned portraits

I am drawn to character, mood, and narrative in portraits. My techniques are carefully honed and fall into two categories: chiaroscuro, with its deep shadows and contrasting lights, and working with a grey tone underpainting for lighter pictures.

The work begins with a pencil sketch directly onto the canvas, which is then secured with a thin layer of acrylic. After this, I begin to fine-tune the composition and experiment with the tonal range before building the colours in layers.  The sequence works from dark to light and back again because every tone and colour is influenced by what is around them. During the process compositional changes take place relative to backgrounds.

Personal portraits in oils

Most of my subjects are people I know, which allows me to form a deep connection with them. This connection, however, is subjective and situational, reflecting my unique viewpoint. Each sitter has layers of personality, and I strive to capture what I perceive as the most profound aspects.

Commissioning a portrait in oils

At the heart of my approach is collaboration. I believe that spending time with the sitter before commencement is crucial. This way, I get to know them, their personality, and their preferences for styles of painting. I understand that having a portrait painted can be a little daunting, especially when it's commissioned by someone else. To ease any concerns, I share a photograph of the painting at each stage. We engage in open discussions about the next steps, explore options, and make adjustments as per their requests. I see this entire journey as a partnership, ensuring that every client receives a portrait that they, their family, and friends can cherish.

My work is never confined to a fixed style. Whether it's classical, contemporary, or more vibrant with loosely applied paint, I can adapt my approach to suit preferences. This flexibility ensures that a portrait reflects a client’s character.

On average, it takes three months to complete a portrait in oils. Depending upon complexity, prices range from £750 for a head and shoulders to £1800 for a full body.  Group paintings can range from £2500 to £6000 based on the number of people and the setting.

Travel expenses are free for clients within fifty miles of my studio in Ross on Wye. Beyond that, we agree on a price.
