My still life oil paintings span a range of art categories: classical, contemporary, surreal, and lyrical. Some of these creations are born from my explorations of second-hand and antique shops, while others materialise out of thin air. Occasionally, an event can trigger a burst of inspiration. For instance, the idea of asparagus spearing an egg was sparked by a simple mishap—dropping an egg while preparing mayonnaise for grilled asparagus. It's these unexpected sources that keep my creative process exciting and unpredictable.
Eggplant arose from a funny conversation. My wife, being Australian, calls the vegetable an eggplant, whilst I use the ‘proper’ moniker of aubergine! The name zucchini is also a point of light-hearted contention.
The humorous painting of homemade wine made with a pestle in a glass resulted from dinner with a friend who is something of a wine buff. He was very disparaging of amateur winemakers, and as such, I decided to educate him with a painting. Hybrid grapes led on from that after he waxed lyrical about French vineyards blending grapes. I have to admit that I chuckled when producing them as I have with other artworks like the dancing carrots. Infantile as it is, finding appendages on carrots and parsnips, especially rude ones, is a regular source of merriment, particularly when they come out of my own garden.
Above all, my work is driven by a deep appreciation for what I perceive as beauty. The inspiration for the cauliflower painting came from a friend who had purchased it at a farmers market. Its sculptural form was so striking that it demanded a place on a plinth. This experience has sparked a series of still life paintings, in which I aim to elevate humble vegetables to the status of art gallery exhibits.
