oil paintings on recycled wood

These works are painted to commission. I can produce both hanging artworks, mirrors and table furniture. The wood I use is recycled from pallets, building site skips, fencing and doors. The images are painted directly onto the wood.

The process is time consuming and at times challenging. Firstly, the wood has to be dried out (in my airing cupboard) for several months. Secondly, it takes an eternity to sand the wood as flat as possible to get rid of any pronounced grain. Thirdly, the image has to be placed between knots and away from where the sections join. Finally, a light coat of wood stain is applied before adding a white silhouette of the subject. Oil paint is built up in layers which has to dry between each application.

Once the picture is complete it is given several coats of clear varnish to protect both the wood and the painting.
